About the Position
The Communications and Member Services Team of Texas Electric Cooperatives seeks an experienced writer and copy editor with a background in journalism. The ideal candidate will have experience in fact checking, proofreading and line editing for print and digital audiences and at least some reporting experience. The interview process will begin in mid-December, with intention to hire mid-late January 2025.
The position is critical in communicating the cooperative difference to the more than 1.8 million members of electric cooperatives across Texas. The role entails editing and proofreading tasks that can be rote and tedious at times but also offers opportunities for creativity, collaboration and learning new skills on a deadline-driven team.
The Communications Specialist should be comfortable managing multiple deadlines and maintaining established standards in a collaborative environment. The ideal candidate must be able to manage often-heavy workloads while maintaining high quality standards and consistently meeting deadlines.
The position will be fully in-office to train and can be transitioned to a hybrid model once training is complete.
Responsibilities
- Proofread, copy edit and fact check content for Texas Co-op Power magazine and other company publications, communicating with internal and external stakeholders and sources as needed.
- Plan and write content, including creative copy and reported material, as assigned.
- Serve as a project manager for ongoing communications projects that support initiatives within the department, across the association and among the statewide membership.
- Attend required conferences, at least two per year, as well as events around the state.
- Contribute editorial ideas in meetings and retreats.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field or at least five years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated writing and editing skills. Strong storytelling skills and experience in crafting impactful content is essential.
- Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to style guidelines.
- Must have a valid driver’s license to travel for company-related business.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with AP Style and with working under an in-house style guide.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Photography skills, especially experience shooting live events.
- Experience with Adobe and Apple production tools.
- Familiarity with social media tools, platforms, and content.
- Some knowledge of Texas’ electric cooperatives.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to stand or sit particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Able to operate a computer and other office machinery using finger dexterity for typing and writing.
- Must be able to communicate, converse with, and exchange information by means of the spoken word.
- Able to perform light physical effort to lift or move materials up to 50 pounds.
- Visual acuity to view a computer screen.
