Description:
The University of Illinois Chicago, Facilities Management is seeking to fill several Building Service Supervisor positions. The supervisor coordinates the Building Service activities for University Buildings. The Building Service Supervisor reports to the Superintendent of Building Services / Assistant Director of Facilities Management, whom in turn report to the Associate Director of Facilities Management.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Direct Daily Activities - The supervisor works directly with the Building Service Workers in accomplishing the Building Services tasks. They prepare the Daily Work Sheets, detailing the specific tasks to be performed, ensuring departmental cleaning standards are met, directing corrective measures when needed, performing rounds with BSWs to obtain actionable information and to ensure that they are performing their tasks efficiently.
- Training and Development - The supervisor demonstrates and instructs the Building Service Workers in the proper cleaning techniques, equipment use and maintenance, and safe and proper use of cleaning chemicals and supplies. This runs the range from complex scrubbing machines to brooms and brushes. They are also responsible for conducting performance evaluations and ensuring that work rules and procedures are followed.
- Scheduling - The supervisor must schedule employees' assignments as well as the tasks to be performed. Some work is required on a daily basis (i.e., sweeping, mopping, trash removal, etc.), while other work is cyclical. Vacuuming is accomplished at least weekly, while floor maintenance should occur on Yearly basis. Some areas are available for cleaning only on a quarterly basis. The supervisor must distribute their labor resources in order to accomplish as many tasks as possible.
- Timecards - The supervisor is responsible for approving the timecards of all Building Service Workers under his/her leadership. Correct job codes must be entered to insure the proper accounts are charged. The timecards also reflect the employees' use of benefits, so accuracy is very important.
- Discipline - Recommends discipline actions to maintain performance standards, and efficient and safe operations. The Building Service Supervisor will continue the disciplinary process at the suspension step, following through with the formal procedure, representing the department where necessary.
- Coordination - The current policy of having a Day Cleaning Program requires very close coordination with the various departments in the campus buildings. Any changes in schedule or special cleaning requires notification (and on occasion, approval) of the affected department. This is the responsibility of the supervisor.
- Equipment - The supervisor is responsible for testing and recommending new equipment. In many instances, they also develop the specifications.
- Supervisors also assist in developing the technical standards and maintenance requirements for equipment on inventory.
- Supplies - There is a great variety of supplies required to support the Building Services Operation. The supervisor must ensure that they are available in sufficient quantities to insure an operation without interruption.
- Coordinate Flood control, snow removal, emergency services, and/or overtime.
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications Required:
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Three (3) years (36 months) of experience in building service operations or related work.
- Two (2) years (24 months) in building custodial supervisory capacity.
