Job Overview:
The Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator/Locator is responsible for managing the entire drilling process, including both operating the drilling equipment and accurately locating the drill head to place products underground. This position requires comprehensive expertise in HDD operations and locating practices to ensure safe and precise drilling while preventing damage to existing utilities. The HDD Operator/Locator will collaborate with the crew, manage equipment, and uphold the highest safety and quality standards throughout all project phases.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drill Operation & Equipment Management:
- Operate HDD machinery for safe and efficient drilling and conduit installation.
- Perform daily inspections, fueling, and maintenance of drilling equipment to ensure optimal operation.
- Set up and complete drilling projects according to specifications, including pullback of conduit.
- Locating & Navigation:
- Accurately locate and track the drill head during operations, ensuring drilling aligns with project blueprints and site requirements.
- Interpret utility locates and assess ground conditions to prevent utility damage and claims.
- Provide real-time feedback and direction adjustments to maintain drilling accuracy.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Follow and enforce all safety protocols and company standards to maintain a safe work environment.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) properly and address any equipment defects promptly.
- Conduct safety assessments and report unsafe conditions to mitigate risks.
- Communication & Team Coordination:
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with the drilling crew, including helpers and supervisors, to ensure seamless project execution.
- Coordinate with team members, such as foremen and project managers, for job progress updates and problem resolution.
- Act as a liaison between field operations and management to provide project feedback and updates.
- Project Planning & Ground Condition Assessment:
- Assess and adapt to changing ground conditions, adjusting drilling techniques as needed to avoid complications.
- Review drilling plans and ensure that all setup and bore alignments are correct prior to drilling.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate project documentation, including timesheets and progress reports.
- Ensure all records comply with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of HDD drilling and locating experience, with a preference for projects involving electrical power.
- Licenses: Must have a Class A CDL with a clean driving record.
- Technical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of HDD equipment operation, maintenance, and ground condition assessment.
- Safety Focus: Strong commitment to safety standards and the ability to lead by example.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal communication skills for effective coordination and teamwork.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50 lbs or more, work in various weather conditions, and maintain physically demanding positions for extended periods.
- Adaptability: Capability to work in challenging environments and respond effectively to changing job demands.
Additional Skills:
- Proficiency with vac truck operation and excavator experience is a plus.
- Ability to climb poles and operate bucket trucks as needed.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
