The State of New Hampshire, Department of Health & Human Services and New Hampshire Hospital has a full-time vacancy for HVAC Technician.
Summary : Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, modify and install commercial and residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for New Hampshire Hospital (NHH) and other related buildings maintained by the NHH Facilities Department.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Associate’s degree in HVAC Technology or a related field.
Experience: Three years of experience in HVAC maintenance and repair or construction of buildings or facilities.
License/Certification:
1. Must possess a valid New Hampshire driver’s license with appropriate endorsements required for the type of vehicle being operated.
2. Must possess or successfully complete a Defensive Driving Course as approved by the New Hampshire Safety Council within the first six (6) months of employment.
3. As a condition of and prior to hire, the applicant must have verified their current New Hampshire driving record supplied by the Department of Safety, Division of Motor Vehicles indicating no major traffic violations.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference given to applicants possessing:
1. Licensure as a Gasfitter and/or a certificate in HVAC Equipment installation or Service Technician.
2. Familiarity with energy management, HVAC systems and/or Johnson Controls Metasys platform.
Responsibilities:
- Diagnoses electrical and mechanical faults for HVAC systems, repairs malfunctioning equipment and installs new system for, e.g., refrigeration systems, air conditioning units, and heating pumps according to specifications and schematics.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance inspections, and repairs on existing HVAC units and systems, including air handlers, boilers and furnaces, air conditioning equipment, heat pumps to ensure each component is functioning properly as well as the system as a whole.
- Maintains accurate inspection, service and maintenance records, writes reports as required for management review and ensures compliance with safety regulations and industry standards during installation and maintenance tasks. Assist in managing the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Joint Commission required documentation.
- Communicates effectively with team members, management and external customers to promote timely completion of projects that are within budget and with optimal customer satisfaction.
- Operates equipment management controls (Metasys) to enable start, stop, seek status, or change conditions on HVAC systems and maximize efficiency levels in all environmentally controlled areas.
- Trains and mentors service technicians and other trades staff in preventative maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of HVAC systems and related electrical and mechanical components of the systems.
- Assists a variety of trades positions with new construction and remodel plan reviews for upcoming projects involving the HVAC systems and performs mechanical repairs to varied equipment, metal fabrication, and other miscellaneous building maintenance work.
- Responds to an emergency repair situation of HVAC equipment and/or fire, flood and power failure to maintain a functionally safe environment for all patients, staff and visitors, including emergency call after normal work shift.
- Operates the Boiler and Chiller plants to maintain system temperatures and equipment runtimes through the Metasys System.
Ability to:
- Work independently and within a team.
- Lift at least 50 pounds.
- Work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, as needed.
- Continue education and training to stay current with industry developments and advancements.
Duties performed may include working in areas that support civil and forensic populations.

- Performing accountabilities in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Communicating with supervisors’ issues related to workplace safety (i.e., ergonomics, body mechanics, environment, equipment, etc.).
- Attending training programs such as Defensive Driving, Cues to Crisis, Boiler and Cooling Tower Water Treatment, and others as directed.
