Job Summary: The Diesel Shop Lead is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a diesel repair shop. This role includes leading technicians, ensuring quality workmanship, maintaining safety standards, managing shop workflow, and providing exceptional customer service. The Diesel Shop Lead will also be responsible for diagnosing complex diesel engine issues, ensuring that repairs are completed on time and within budget, and assisting with training and mentoring staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership & Supervision:
- Lead and supervise team
- Delegate tasks to technicians based on their skills and expertise
- Ensure the team is properly trained on safety standards, repair procedures, and equipment usage.
- Monitor performance, provide feedback, and conduct performance reviews.
- Foster a positive and productive work environment.
- Shop Operations:
- Oversee daily operations of the shop, ensuring efficiency and productivity.
- Ensure that all repairs are performed in accordance with industry standards and manufacturer specifications.
- Manage the shop’s workflow to ensure timely and accurate completion of repairs and maintenance.
- Ensure proper documentation of work orders, labor hours, parts used, and maintenance history.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop, tools, and equipment.
- Customer Service & Communication:
- Serve as a point of contact, providing updates on the status of repairs.
- Diagnostics & Technical Support:
- Lead complex diagnostic efforts on diesel engines, drivetrains, fuel systems, electrical systems, and other related components.
- Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting
- Stay up to date with the latest diesel engine technology, tools, and repair methods.
- Inventory & Parts Management:
- Monitor and manage the shop’s inventory of tools, parts, and supplies.
- Order parts as needed, ensuring that inventory is stocked and available for repairs.
- Maintain relationships with suppliers and vendors for cost-effective purchasing and quick turnaround.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure the shop complies with all relevant safety regulations, local, state, and federal laws, including OSHA standards.
- Promote a safety-conscious culture and enforce safety protocols for technicians and shop personnel.
- Perform regular safety audits and address any potential hazards immediately.
- Budgeting & Cost Management:
- Monitor repair costs
- Work with the operations manager or owner to maintain a profitable operation.
- Assist in the preparation and execution of the shop’s budget.
- Other Duties:
- Assist in hiring and onboarding new team members.
- Participate in training and professional development programs.
- Stay current with industry trends and technological advancements.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or certification in diesel mechanics is preferred.
- At least 5 years of experience in diesel repair, with 2+ years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Strong understanding of diesel engine diagnostics, repair, and maintenance.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficient with diagnostic tools, repair equipment, and shop management software.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in a mechanic or repair shop setting.
- Valid driver’s license, with a clean driving record (may be required depending on location).
- CDL Class A preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, kneel, or crouch for long periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in noisy, dirty, and sometimes hazardous environments.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $35.00 - $45.00 per hour
