Overview:
Herzog Transit Services, Inc. is currently seeking a
Train Dispatcher in
Austin, TX to join our team. The Train Dispatcher provides day-to-day supervision and authorization of the safe and efficient movement of all trains within the assigned territory consistent with operating rules, policies, and procedures of Herzog Transit Services, Inc., and the commuter agency, Capital Metro Transit Authority.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.
- Ensure compliance with federal and company safety rules, policies and procedures. Respond to safety concerns and take appropriate action.
- Knowledge of territory and physical characteristics, train schedules (arrival/departures), and destinations.
- Ensures proper track bulletins, track warrants, and communications to all employees are accurate/timely.
- Monitors train movement and conditions affecting movements, such as weather conditions, train crew availability, and equipment availability. Coordinates responses to unplanned events and emergency situations and manages these instances to minimize passenger inconvenience and limit delays to affected trains.
- Performs a variety of administrative duties relative to hours-of-service requirements, hazardous materials, documentation of train movements and delays incurred, updating Digital Message Signs, and reporting rule violations.
- Direct and indirect supervision of all train crews, Maintenance of Way, and signal employees working on, or near the railroad tracks.
- Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
- Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Previous train dispatching experience preferred, or minimum 2 years’ experience as a railroad engineer
- High School diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Physical, drug screening, and background check
- Ability to read, write, & communicate, as well as issue oral instructions, clearly and accurately utilizing a variety of communication devices
- Ability to type 35 words per minute
- Able to sit for extended periods of time and accurately input data into computer systems
- Available to work 40-hour work week. Subject to overtime, on-call, and alternate shifts that include weeknights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to make quick and accurate decisions in a high-pressure environment.
- Must be able to pass required tests prior to completing training period.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
- Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
- This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle.
- Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

- Requires occasional standing, walking, lifting, stooping or bending.
- Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
- Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position.
