Under direction, performs a diverse range of tasks involved in the installation, inspection, repair, servicing, and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits. Responsibilities include troubleshooting and diagnosing issues, ensuring compliance with electrical codes, and maintaining safety standards. This role also involves updating and repairing electrical systems to improve efficiency and reliability. Additional duties may include providing technical support and guidance on electrical matters, coordinating with other trades professionals as necessary, and performing related work as required.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Conducts thorough inspections of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, motors, generators, pumps, power circuits, and machine and elevator controllers to determine the nature of needed repairs or replacements and executes the necessary repairs and installations.
- Installs, maintains, inspects, repairs, and services both high- and low-tension power and light feeders, generating and control equipment, relays, transformers, motors, pumps, switches, outlets, signal systems, and other electrical wiring, cables, fixtures, and appliances of varied types.
- Oils, greases, and maintains electrical fixtures, appliances, and other equipment in good working order, replacing worn parts as needed.
- Utilizes a variety of test equipment, including ammeters, voltmeters, and ohmmeters, to assess and diagnose electrical issues.
- Makes emergency electrical repairs, troubleshoots malfunctions and breakdowns, and inspects work in progress and completed work for defects, fire hazards, or other unsafe conditions.
- When required, instructs inmates of state institutions in simple electrical work, providing guidance and supervision.
- Possesses a strong understanding of the use and nomenclature of various types of conduits, fittings, cables, insulators, and other related equipment.
- Works from electrical schematics, plans, and specifications following established procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
- Manages the requisition, storage, and proper usage of electrical equipment, materials, and supplies, ensuring optimal resource utilization.
- Maintains detailed records of equipment used, work performed, and time spent on tasks.
- Ensures the removal of all debris post-maintenance in vacant, occupied, basement, and/or common areas to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Education/Experience/License:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years of experience in work involving the installation, inspection, repair, servicing and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits.
- Appointee is required to be a licensed Electrician in the State of New Jersey.
- Appointee will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of this position.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Note: Appointees may be required to pass a colorblindness test.
- Demonstrates a deep understanding of the problems, equipment, and techniques involved in installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of electrical systems including cables, wiring, motors, generators, pumps, refrigerators, radios, sound equipment, switchboards, oil machinery, and circuits.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and diagrams accurately.
- Skilled in analyzing problems related to electrical installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair, and capable of developing effective work methods.
- Competent in installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining a variety of electrical equipment, appliances, fixtures, machinery, and circuits under diverse conditions.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written instructions, adhere to necessary safety precautions, manage equipment, materials, and supplies effectively, and maintain simple records.
- Exhibits a consistent adherence to required safety precautions to prevent workplace accidents.
- Capable of maintaining straightforward records of work done, materials used, and time spent.
- Willingness and ability to learn and utilize various types of electronic and manual recording and information systems employed by the agency, office, or related units.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to fulfill job responsibilities.
- Good health and absence of physical and mental limitations that could impair job performance or pose a safety risk to self or others.
