Position Summary: Schafer Industries is currently seeking a Maintenance Technician - 1st shift for its Schafer Industries operation in South Bend, IN.

Job Summary: The entry level Maintenance Technician is responsible for assisting the Maintenance Technician in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a variety of machine tools. This position will troubleshoot, select materials, and order parts to perform routine preventive maintenance on machinery and facilities.
Essential Functions:
- Conducts Preventive Maintenance Program on machines and facilities by:
- Assisting in improving machine uptime by reducing/eliminating machine issues
- Work with outside contractors to address issues with both equipment and facilities.
- Assist with machine moves, building repairs/improvements and light machine repairs.
Responsible for repair of machines and facility and where necessary by supporting Maintenance Technician.
- Perform actual repair on the machines to minimize the down time.
- Support senior technician for the repair for quick machine recovery.
- Coordinate with local vendors for necessary services as applicable.
- Help lead and track facility and maintenance related projects.
- Inquire and recommend purchase of maintenance parts as applicable.
Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by:
- Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area.
- Participating in Lean activities and engage in continuous improvement.
- Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution.
- Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures.
- Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
- Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements.
- Resolving problems.
- Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- High School Diploma or GED
- Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
- Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.
- Previous experience in Mechanical, Plumbing, HVAC, or Electrical is preferred.
- Must be able to communicate in English.
- Must have strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office and Excel.
Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
