Performs moderately complex (journey-level) custodial supervisory work. The Custodial Manager I, provides general guidance and direction to their assigned team of custodians. They perform Quality Control inspections of housekeeping services to assigned buildings, checking for appropriate use and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment. Reports unsafe conditions and provides feedback on unit(s) cleanliness, housekeeping/maintenance needs, and supply inventory. Actively participates in the hiring, training, and performance management of assigned team. Ensures the unit(s) is ready for inspection by internal and external agencies. Supervises the work of others. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Shift statement (use as needed): This position may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights and/or weekends.
MSP statement (use as needed): This position may also be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on maximum security locations.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs):
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Performs routine inspections on assigned units and corrects deficiencies and provides feedback to the assigned custodians.
Prepares reports of work activities and organizes job tasks, seeking assistance from their supervisor, when needed.
Monitors employee performance, providing employees with performance feedback and on-the-job training as required or requested. Conducts employee performance evaluations on assigned custodians.
Participates in the interviewing process, hiring process and exit process on new or separating employees, exercises hiring and termination authority. Ensures vacancies are filled as soon as possible so that the workload can be assigned and distributed equitably.
Ensures supply inventory is maintained on assigned unit(s) and emphasizes to the assigned custodians the importance of maintaining the supply inventory.
Ensures staff comply with Environmental Services standard operating procedures.
Represents the Environmental Services department on ad hoc committees as requested.
Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures of inventory control principles and methods
Knowledge of housekeeping services, procedures, chemical usage and equipment
Skills in the use of custodial materials, chemicals, and operating equipment
Skills in inspecting work areas
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.
Ability to prioritize job tasks.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:
Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Screening Criteria:
Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
Two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory/leadership role
Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.
Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All these diseases are vaccine preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
