ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Responsible for the inspection, installation, maintenance and repair of the plumbing systems and associated ancillaries, throughout the District.
2. Installs, repairs and maintains water heaters, plumbing fixtures, sanitation and storm drain systems, water filters, water softeners, water meters, back flow prevention devices, lawn sprinklers, pumps, pressure tanks, swimming pools, grease traps, gas tests, mixing devices, gas, water, steam, heating/cooling pipe fitting systems and fire hydrants and fire protection systems.
3. Performs regularly scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, troubleshoots malfunctions, makes major repairs and recommends replacement of equipment.
4. Must be able to disassemble, clean and make ready equipment for building health and safety inspections.
5. Maintains accurate records of all equipment serviced.
6. Performs a full range of pipe fitting duties to include installing copper and brass lines for water, gas and pneumatic systems; brazing and soldering small copper or brass pipes and joints; installing heavy steel and/or cast iron threaded or unthreaded piping systems ranging from 1/2" to 12" in diameter; installs, services and repairs valves and control devices ranging from small appliance petcocks to massive cast iron back-flow preventers weighing more than 800 lbs; installs, inspects and repairs above ground and buried vessels, tanks and traps; utilizing various test devices and instruments, the incumbent performs leak and pressurization tests on all gas and liquid transfer utility piping systems.
7. Applies corrosion inhibitors (including paint) and insulation to piping systems - Installs, secures and adjusts flexible and rigid pipe support structures.
8. Performs hand excavation and entrenchment to expose piping and system components utilizing tools, shoring and other equipment provided by the District.
9. Applies pipe coatings and cathodic protection anodes to all underground structures.
10. Performs hand back-fill of entrenched piping to assure maximum protection of all coatings.
11. Plans and accomplishes work from initial layout to final assembly which involves interpreting and applying building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, and other plumbing guides or codes.
12. Determines the methods, techniques, materials, devices, and sequences best suited to the work.
13. Completes work by any of the accepted methods and techniques of the trade, i.e., fabricates odd size jointing parts and improvises installations when blue prints and sketches do not provide or fail to show data to do the work.
14. Plans and insures the proper slant, slope, fall or level of installations to provide for proper flow, drainage, and sanitary operating conditions and to prevent back flow vacuum, or air lock condition - Incumbent must be able to work closely with other trades for layout of new or replacement of existing equipment.
15. Ensures good housekeeping, health and safety practices are utilized - Responsible for securing and maintaining all assigned personal tools, equipment and District vehicles in serviceable order.
16. Required to perform shop and industrial housekeeping practices that are in the areas associated with the systems being maintained.
17. Responsible for independently assessing the work situation on site, determining the best method of accomplishment and taking the necessary corrective action while following accepted safety practices.
18. Consults with Plumber II as needed relative to interpretation of guidance, and extent of work authorized if work requires more than the number of hours allowed by the maintenance service order.
19. Maintains confidentiality of information.
20. Reports to work on time every day.
21. Follows District safety guidelines.
22. Performs additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination to include vision, hearing, alcohol and drug testing
- Broad professional knowledge of plumbing systems and the ability to diagnose and repair equipment in a timely manner to maintain operation and to prevent costly repairs and down time
- Expert knowledge of the trade practices used in plumbing systems installation, repair and maintenance
- Knowledge of all pertinent regulations, codes, policies and practices to ensure compliance
- Proficient in pipe fitting; plumbing layout, diagnosis of hydraulic problems, application of cathodic protection techniques, troubleshooting minor electrical controls that relate to the plumbing trade, brazing, cutting and threading, cleaning/unplugging sanitation systems, use of gas detection equipment - This knowledge must be coupled with well-rounded field experience to perform effective inspections, identify operations and perform diagnostics on essential systems and fixtures
- Good communication skills to discuss and define issues of mechanical and electrical issues with appropriate supervisory personal and/or school administrators
- Ability to read project plans for new or remodeled areas related to his/her position and recommend application practices is required
- Valid Texas Drivers License with driving record that meets the requirements of the District
