Summary
Responsible for the direct supervision of crews and personnel on projects requiring heavy rigging, layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, erection and maintenance of various components including structural steel, structural building components, prefabricated buildings, building siding, roof decking, roof trusses, floor trusses, shoring, reinforcing steel, grating, platforms, equipment stands, handrails, guards, stairways, equipment and ductwork. Makes job assignments and provides supervision and direction to craftsmen performing various job tasks. Is knowledgeable and skilled in the fabrication, assembly and installation of various structural steel materials including structural shapes, channel, angle, beams, structural tubing, pipe, plate, corrugated metals, expanded metals, sheet materials, of various types / grades of aluminum, carbon steel and stainless steel. Utilizes various construction and fabrication techniques including multiple methods of welding, cutting and grinding. Maintains a current knowledge and skills in the rigging and hoisting of structural steel, building components and equipment. Maintains records of the installation methods used as well as the testing and project documentation required to document compliance with specifications. Works with client personnel to ensure proper installation techniques and quality workmanship as well as adherence to scheduling requirements.
Primary Responsibilities & Skills
Responsible for maintaining a safe job site through proper job site and task evaluation and the selection and use of appropriate PPE and tools and project controls such as housekeeping, equipment isolation, and lockout and job safety procedures. Provides oversight and assistance to employees in these activities as required. Is trained in and is responsible for compliance with the environmental, safety and health policies and procedures of the company and its clients by all individuals under his or her direction.
Responsible for making individual job assignments and directing the layout, fabrication, installation, erection and maintenance of structural steel and miscellaneous steel components found in commercial and industrial manufacturing facilities. Reads blueprints and performs layout of components for fabrication, assembly and erection as required to facilitate project requirements. Reads and follows project specifications and material requirements and ensures compliance with these documents during all project activities. Ensures the quality of workmanship and productivity of the workforce and the personnel under his or her supervision. Maintains and reports daily records of time and attendance of the employees under his or her direction.
Responsible for project planning and executing project plans and working with other craft foremen, supervisors and management for the coordination of the work of his crew with other trades and co-workers to efficiently execute project requirements and meet project schedule requirements.
Oversees the safe operation by others and may operate various types of fabrication equipment, hand tools and power tools, including levels, transits, torque wrenches, punches, shears, hand drills, drill presses, saws, grinders, torches, hydraulic pressing and swaging equipment. Operates and oversees the operation and inspection of equipment such as forklifts, man-lifts, scissor lifts and welding machines and where applicable has current licensing and / or certification of training and competency authorizing use of the same and ensures the same of those under his direction.
Responsible for and skilled in various steel fabrication and assembly techniques, including oxy-acetylene cutting, plasma cutting, butt welding, brazing, bolting. Skilled in maintaining compliance with ASME / AWS requirements in various welding techniques and processes for various types of materials that are required for the fabrication of structural steel and miscellaneous steel structures and components.
Responsible for directing the rigging and hoisting of various equipment and components into position utilizing proper rigging and hoisting techniques and equipment such as chain falls, ratchet lever hoists, slings, chokers, beam clamps, etc. and has been trained in the proper selection and use of hoisting and rigging equipment and maintains certifications of training and competency of use of rigging and hoisting methods and equipment. Oversees and directs the hoisting and rigging efforts of his crew members to ensure the use of proper techniques.
Education & Training
Will possess a minimum of a high school degree or equivalent GED. Has successfully completed a certified ironworker apprenticeship training program and maintains a current ironworker journeyman certification. Typically will have 5 or more years of ironworking experience as a journeyman prior to being assigned a foreman’s position. Is trained in the various health and safety requirements of working in an industrial environment. Is trained in rigging and hoisting and qualified in the proper selection and use of hoisting equipment. Is trained in the proper operation of forklifts, man-lifts and scissor lifts. Is trained in the administration and use of various company procedures required for performing the responsibilities of the position.
