Located in Bakersfield, CA, San Joaquin Refining has the favorable position of refining only San Joaquin Valley Heavy Naphthenic crude oil. The San Joaquin Valley consists of many oil-producing counties. Kern County is not only the largest oil-producing county in the San Joaquin Valley, but also the largest oil-producing county in all of California. If Kern County was a state in its own right, it would rank behind Texas, Alaska, and Louisiana as the fourth largest oil producer in the country, producing approximately 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day, representing 6% of the nation’s oil production and 1% of the total world’s production.
Job Purpose:
As a refinery operator, your primary responsibilities are operating equipment safely, monitoring meters and gauges, and meeting production goals for your area.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Operates various types of plant equipment
- Monitors process operating parameters and utility infrastructure operations (i.e. boilers, water treatment, HTF system,
vacuum system, etc.)
- Monitors and operates computerized plant control system
- Makes multiple daily plant rounds checking equipment for possible problems
- Recommends preventative maintenance or repair and undertakes minor repairs when possible (if qualified)
- Troubleshoots processing problems and takes appropriate corrective action
- Perform general housekeeping as needed
- Participate in meetings and training sessions regarding production/operations and environmental, health and safety
- Perform all duties in manner consistent with environmental, health and safety policies and objectives
Education and Basic Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Able to read, write and speak English fluently
- Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Email, ability to learn company-specific programs)
Experience and Job Skills:
• Must have experience working with Process and Equipment Controls – computerized plant and equipment controls such as Programmable Logic Controller or Distributed Controls System, etc.
- Must have a minimum of three years’ experience as an outside operator in an HDA, or a minimum of five years’ experience on a HDS, hydrogen plant or sulfur plant with industry digital control. You will not be considered with less experience.
- Experience working in a small plant environment (i.e. less than 40 people)
- Experience working with and troubleshooting the following:
Rotating equipment, heat transfer equipment, utility infrastructure (boilers, cooling tower, air compressors, vacuum system, water treatment, etc.)
- Experience working with distillation, filter presses, centrifuges, and batch reactors is a significant plus
- Able to communicate with internal company personnel and external vendors effectively
- Able to make routine decisions within a predetermined span of authority
- Able to exercise independent judgment prior to consultation with supervisor
- Must have a hands-on approach and strong work ethic
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to heights, noise, extreme weather conditions, and areas where hazardous chemicals are present
- Must be able to work all shifts / schedules as needed
- Ability to adapt to changing situations and to handle competing demands with flexibility
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, climb stairs, kneel, stoop, sit, and walk extensively

Pay: $48.18 per hour
