The Engineer 1st Class Lead works with engineers and outside contractors to ensure proper and safe maintenance of various components of the heating ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Responsible for oversight, supervision, coordination of engineers and HVAC/R technicians. Repairs, installs and replaces equipment used in the hospitals HVAC/R distribution system.
Your every day
- Maintenance and Construction:
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of HVAC/R systems. Performs corrective and preventative maintenance/repairs on HVAC/R systems. Maintains systems reliability at the highest level possible.
- Maintains equipment and mechanical rooms in a neat clean manner. Ensures performance of equipment rounds.
- Monitors engineers’ corrective and preventive work orders within stipulated timeframe.
- Manages, coordinates and schedules vendors to fulfill contractual obligations.
- Maintains all departmental and organizational policy paperwork for regulatory compliance.
- Department Productivity:
- Provides leadership, counsel, coaching, motivation, feedback, discipline and documentation for junior team members.
- Evaluates all maintenance requests, sets priorities and leads departmental work assignments.
- Maintains all engineers’ supplies, tools and inventory stock. Monitors and controls utility usage at optimal levels.
- Communicates with the requester of work orders to clarify concerns and ensure satisfactory results. Mentors engineers and strives for efficient work order completion.
- Patient Safety/ Fire Life Safety:
- Leads engineers to maintain compliance with regulatory surveys, building codes and fire/life safety standards. Conducts routine environmental and safety rounds.
- Troubleshoot repairs:
- Seeks, investigates, identifies, resolves and documents all needed repairs in a timely manner. Strives for a safe, clean and damage free environment.
- Time Management/Service Training:
- Manages time to close work orders per department standards.
- Prioritizes and organizes work tasks. Works with little supervision.

Your must haves
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a licensed First-Class AC and Boiler Engineer within commercial facilities (healthcare, hotel, or similar) and/or related construction industries. Experience in managing direct reports.
- 3 years or more experience as a First-Class AC and Boiler Engineer in facility management in a hospital environment managing direct reports preferred.
- Experience with building automation systems (BAS) preferred.
- Experience with computer maintenance management software preferred.
EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
- Required: High School Diploma/GED or equivalent OR 2 years of work experience.
- Preferred: Advanced trade school or some college education
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Certification Name: Valid First-Class AC and Boiler Engineering License with the Parish of Orleans or equal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Experience with heating, air conditioning, hydronic systems, air moving and filtration equipment, thorough understanding of building/room pressurization and indoor air quality.
- Operates hand tools, power tools, equipment and electrical testing equipment requiring manual dexterity.
- Ability to understand complex oral and written instructions, schematic drawings and layouts.
- Utilize computer, printer, copier, telephone, calculator, cell phone and 2-way radios. Working knowledge of MS Office software products.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population.
- Ability to work alternative/shift work schedules including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime hours.
