General Summary:
The Pipe Layer is responsible for laying water/sewer and storm drains. The incumbent will assist with duties such as equipment operation, shoveling and other labor-intensive tasks. This position receives close supervision related to specific work activities, assignments, method, etc.; usually receives frequent observation/inspection over job activities; instructions are detailed and assignments are typically short-term. Good judgment and common sense is required in all duties and any other tasks assigned. Normal work hours are day or night shift eight (8) to fourteen (14) hours Monday through Friday. Weekend work may be required depending on the contract. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) as required. This job description provides an overview of responsibilities and task to be performed. It is not intended to be an all-inclusive job description as needs tend to change over time.
Job Location: This position is not set in a specific location; we cover the Raleigh and Durham Metro areas. Our home base is Durham, NC, and we cover a 50-mile radius outside of Durham.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Reports all unsafe conditions and actions to a supervisor and/or Manager Safety and Health.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs as required by Sunrock, MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22.
- Responsible for performing pre-shift/pre-trip inspections and filling out respective reports.
- Locate underground services, such as pipes or wires, prior to beginning work.
- Responsible for laying water/sewer and storm drain.
- Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment and other workers.
- Perform task associated with grading crew including equipment operation, shoveling and labor-intensive task.
- Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met.
- Performs all work in a safe, efficient manner, following routine and all standards of performance. Work is repetitive and continuous.
- Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
- Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
- Performs other duties assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read a limited number of two and three-syllable English words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
- Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred, but not required.
- Two (2) years of prior pipe experience required. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Current North Carolina Driver’s License and acceptable driving record required
