Position Summary:
Provides skilled plumbing work at a master or journeyman level in the installation, maintenance and repair of domestic water, steam, natural gas, sewer, compressed air, vacuum, medical gases and other utilities systems in general building, mechanical, office, and laboratory environments.

- Preferences: 3-5 years of journeyman or master plumbing experience, hospital or academic setting environment
Position Key Accountabilities:
1. Installs and repairs plumbing for all UTHSC buildings following standard safety codes and procedures.
2. Performs the service, installation, maintenance, and repair of water, air, gas, sewer and steam systems.
3. Uses the latest techniques to cut, fit, and connect copper, plastic, rubber, vinyl, neoprene, aluminum, and stainless steel tubing; cut, thread, and fit black, galvanized, and brass pipe; cut and fit galvanized and black pipe using grooved (Victaulic) coupling connectors; cut, fit, and solder copper and brass pipe; cut, fit, and join glass pipe; cut, fit, and connect various plastic pipe; cut, fit, and connect cast iron pipe; use the latest compression techniques and tools (ProPress) for joining copper and bronze pipe.
4. Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs various potable and non-potable hot and cold water circulating and heat exchanger systems; localized and centralized domestic water cooling systems; sewer and storm water drain systems; and compressed air, vacuum, and medical air systems;
5. Studies and interprets existing equipment and project related blueprints, drawings, and specifications. Attend meetings, and assist supervisors and the project management team with the review of plumbing drawings for retrofit and new construction projects.
6. Perform the inspection and testing of equipment and systems following industry standards and manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines.
7. Troubleshoot equipment and systems and develop plans, specifications, estimate costs, submit purchase requests, and purchase materials for needed repairs, alterations, retrofits, and construction projects.
8. Required to communicate with customers and complete assigned work orders using the computerized maintenance manager system (CMMS) through personal computer (PC) and smartphone applications.
9. Required to carry a university communication device as assigned and respond to calls during normal business hours.
10. This job classification is designated as "essential" at the UT Health Science Center at Houston. In case of an emergency, "essential" positions are those required to sustain clinical services and/or are responsible for the protection of university assets. Personnel in designated as "essential" positions are expected to report to their designated work site during their appointed work schedules, even when the institution has been officially declared to be on "restricted access" or "closed" due to adverse conditions.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
- Licensed Journeyman or Master Plumber - Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
- State of Texas Medical Gas Endorsement - preferred.
- The license/certifications must be current at the time of hire and maintained throughout the period of employment.
- Basic PC skills
- Advanced knowledge of modern, state-of-the-art plumbing repairs & installation practices and water & pressure testing.
Minimum Education:
High school degree or equivalent or completion of a recognized apprenticeship.
Minimum Experience:
Three (3) years of experience as a journeyman plumber or two (2) years of experience as a master plumber.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
