Job Overview The Electrician will perform skilled electrical tasks at the journeyman level. This incumbent will perform at schools, facilities, and offices while other tasks are performed in a shop or fixed site.
Position Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operational
- Perform a variety of skilled electrical duties on the interior and exterior of school buildings and facilities, including single and multi-phase work on complex and high voltage electrical systems and associated equipment
- Repair or replace electrical components and equipment including electrical motors, motor controls, blowers, pumps, indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, control panels, main and distribution circuit breakers, lighting and power distribution panel boards, and surge protectors
- Maintain and modify existing electrical service lines
- Installs new electrical conduit and wiring; determines the type, size, location, routing and design of conduit and wiring
- Review work orders, diagrams, schematics, and plans; procure materials, parts and supplies
Safety and Inspection
- Conducts regular inspections of facilities
- Performs preventative maintenance
- Trouble-shoot, test and locate electrical problems
Supervisory Responsibilities
- May supervise a small crew of employees and provide guidance and training

- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Texas Drivers License
- Journeyman Electrician License
- Minimum of 4 years of experience working under a master electrician
- Considerable working experience as a journeyman electrician, including some industrial and commercial electrical work experience
- Ability to receive assignments through work orders and read and interpret diagrams and blueprints
- Ability to read, write and speak English
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, school personnel and the general public
- Ability to keep accurate records and to prepare accurate reports concerning work completed

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
Additional Information
- Work requires sufficient strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential tasks, including operating and using all tools and equipment, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, reaching in front of body and overhead, walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time, climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, and lifts up to 40 feet high. Work is performed both inside and outside school district building and facilities, and often requires working unusual hours or evening shifts and may be designated for 24 hour on-call. Employee is exposed to a wide range of climatic conditions, dust, flammable or toxic chemicals, loud noise and vibrations. Employee is also exposed to potential electrical shock and other physical hazards when working on and around high voltage, operating tools and equipment and working in high places or cramped spaces. Work requires vision necessary to determine color differences. Employee is required to wear and use safety clothing and equipment and to comply with safety policies and procedures. Must be able to handle stressful situations as necessary.
