SUMMARY
Functions as a skilled-level technician who can perform diagnosis and repairs in all areas and specialize in particular areas of repair.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Essential duties include the following. Other responsibilities relative to the service center's operations, upkeep, and maintenance may be assigned.
- Clock In and Out
- Follow Uniform Protocol
- Performs work as outlined on repair orders efficiently and accurately, following dealership and factory standards.
- Diagnose the cause of any malfunction and perform repair.
- Communicate with the parts department to obtain needed parts.
- Road tests vehicles when required.
- Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended.
- Communicate with the parts department to obtain needed parts and properly return unused parts.
- Communicate immediately with the service advisor if additional work is needed, if the work outlined is not required, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time.
- Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order.
- Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to the supervisor
- Keeps customers' cars clean and notifies service advisors immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle.
- Understands and complies with federal, state, and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA, etc.
- Operates all tools and equipment safely.
- Reports any safety issues immediately to management.
- Participates in training programs, schools, and events
- Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical bulletins.
- Keeps shop area neat and clean.
- Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals.
- Follows all other instructions and requests of manager/supervisor.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Must have tools required to perform repairs and services and use them consistent with industry standards.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating, maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Must be able to speak effectively.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must be able to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
- Ability to calculate percentages, area, circumference, volume and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Must be able to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to use a computer for reference and training/testing.
- Ability to work with little to no supervision.
EDUCATION
Education, training and/or state/national certifications should clearly demonstrate the possession of the knowledge and skills stated above.
- High School degree or equivalent preferred
- Valid Drivers license that meets dealership insurability requirements
- ASE certifications preferred in one or more of the following areas:
- Electrical or Electronic Systems
- Manual Drive Train and Axles
- Brakes
- Automatic Transmission and Transaxle
- Heating and Air Conditioning
- Engine Performance
- Suspension and Steering
- Engine Repair
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2 years experience in automotive repair or service
TECHNICIAN CLASSIFICATIONS
Technicians are classified based on training completed and documented through STARS which is then represented by manufacturer warranty codes they are eligible to perform.
A - Electrical, Steering, Suspension, Brakes, HVAC, Electronics, Transmission, Drivability
B - Electrical, Steering, Suspension, Brakes, HVAC, Electronics
C - Electrical, Steering, Suspension, Brakes
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Walking/Standing for 6 to 8 hours in a shift
- Using hand and/or power tools and equipment consistent with industry standards
- Bending, stretching, lifting, reaching and climbing
- Lifting up to 70lbs.
- Possess physical and manual dexterity
