General Statement of Duties
Performs skilled trades work involved in the construction, installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic, communications, instruments, apparatus and building automation equipment.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of a General Lead, Lead Electrician, unit supervisor, or Assistant Facilities Director.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
- Possession of a certificate evidencing the completion of a registered apprentice electrician program.
- Four years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician.
- Must possess and maintain a Class A Journeyman Electrician¿s license issued by the State of Minnesota.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license, or equivalent out-of-state license, including no revocations or suspensions for the two year period prior to the date of employment. Please note that a candidate's driving record will be reviewed prior to an offer of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the full range of current terms, principles, regulations, and procedures associated with the electrical trades, including safety practices, tools and test devices.
- Working knowledge of building and fire codes and relevant ordinances as they pertain to electrical work and safe working conditions.
- Considerable knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations (e.g. National Electrical Codes, Federal Radio Communication (F.R.C.), Occupational Health and Safety Administration (O.S.H.A.), dealing with high voltage work, installing and maintaining high voltage electrical raceway and installation, bonding, grounding, and over current protection.
- Some knowledge of building constructions methods.
- Working ability to understand and follow drawings, blueprints, specifications, schematics and oral instructions.
- Working ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic circuitry, including the ability to identify color-coded wire.
- Working ability to operate a variety of testing devices to troubleshoot problems
- Possess basic computer skills, including word processing and data manipulation.
- Ability to interact effectively with all customers.
- Ability to assist in identifying and responding to the needs of all customers.
- Ability to complete required departmental forms, records, and daily reports in a thorough and timely manner.
- Ability to frequently lift equipment, tools, and supplies up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to withstand repetitive arm motions.
- Ability to frequently withstand repetitive motion of the neck and trunk.
- Ability to continuously perform fine motor skills and grasp objects.
- Ability to get in and out of awkward positions while working in limited space.
- Ability to frequently reach below waist, at waist height and above shoulder height.
- Ability to occasionally climb ladders.
- Ability to operate a lift.
Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties:
- Installs, constructs, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, tests and repairs all types of electrical and communication circuitry, equipment, motors and controls systems from transistors to ¿state of the art¿ technology. This includes high and low voltage systems, fiber optics, and RF communications systems.
- Makes excavations and installs conduit, concrete foundations and pole boxes; pulls and splices cable in the ground and above ground by the use of jackhammers and pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and manual equipment augurs and trenchers. Operates under heavy traffic conditions. Utilizes aerial personal lifts, ladders and manual tools.
- Repairs and maintains starters, clock systems, public address systems, fire alarm systems, control boards, electric receptacles, meters, fans, signal systems, bell and buzzer systems, HVAC equipment, boiler control wiring, and similar items related to automation controls systems.
- Installs, maintains, tests, and modifies electrical equipment such as microprocessor controlled equipment and other electronic devices.
- Conducts work in accordance with safety practices such as fire codes and electrical codes and other safety policies.
- Works with the department¿s Storekeeper to coordinate the procurement of materials and resources required for the effective completion of work assigned.
- Contributes to the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Pay, Benefits and Work Schedule
This is a 12-month position working 40 hours per week.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Electrician negotiated labor agreement. The labor agreement and salary schedule can be found at Labor Agreements - Saint Paul Public Schools (spps.org). The minimum rate of pay for this position is $60.92 per hour.

A test will be administered to create an eligible list of candidates for this classified civil service position. Once created, the list will be used for other Electrician vacancies that may occur for one year.
The test will be administered after the job posting closes and all applications are screened. You will be notified by Human Resources of the test via email.
