HVAC Technician I
Wayne State University is searching for an experienced HVAC Technician I at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):
POSITION PURPOSE Troubleshoot, repair, replace, install, and perform planned corrective, preventive and predictive maintenance tasks on heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and Hot water and steam boiler systems, equipment, associated piping, and controls.
Essential Functions Troubleshooting, repairing, replacing, and maintaining the operation and conditions of:
- HVAC equipment, air handlers, fans, controls, dampers, VAV boxes, heating and cooling coils, ductwork, and distribution piping.
- Refrigeration systems, controls, pumps, coils, heat exchanges, compressors and associated piping, valves, and fittings.
- Heat pump systems, pumps, compressors, controls, coils and associated piping and fittings.
- Hydronic boiler systems, burner assemblies, safeties, controls, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, fittings, coils, radiators, and associated piping and fittings.
- Steam boiler systems, burner assemblies, safeties, controls, heat exchangers, condensate systems, pumps, vents, traps, coils, radiators, and associated piping, valves, and fittings. as fired heating equipment, unit heaters, radiant heating systems, equipment, fans, controls and associated piping, valves, and fittings.
Evaluate equipment conditions, standards, and codes to develop corrective and preventive maintenance tasks, replacement equipment, sub-assemblies, and components, and any technical updates or upgrades.
Comply with all required environmental rules, regulations and policies governing the safe handling of refrigerants, oils, solvents, etc.
Adhere to Environmental, Health and Safety rules, regulations, and policies such as but not limited to personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, control hazardous energy sources, Lock out Tag out procedures as applicable, fall protection when using ladders and lifts or working at heights, confined space entry rules and policies, and proper machine guarding rules and regulations while working on or operating equipment.
Follow all Occupation Health, Safety and Environmental regulations, Wayne State University policies, and work practices, including, but not limited to, personal protective equipment (PPE) during work activities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORK CONTEXT
Job Reports to: Supervisor.
Customer Accountability: Interfaces with customers inside the S/C/D.
Freedom to Act: Subject to regular review by supervisor.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school completion (or GED).
Recognition as a certified journeyman HVAC technician or licensed mechanical contractor in the State of Michigan required.
EPA 608 Universal CFC Certification required.
Preferred Qualifications, Education and Experience for this position (candidates with these additional skills will be given priority)
High school completion (or GED) and Graduation or Certificate of Completion from a HVAC related trade or vocational school with mechanical courses, or completion of an apprenticeship in an allied trade, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (as evaluated and agreed upon by the Management-Union Committee).
Possession of a City of Detroit Boiler Operators License or City of Detroit Refrigeration Operators License.
Graduation from a community college with an associate degree for HVAC or RACH Technician.
Training Certification and Experience with Siemens, Johnson Controls, Automated Logix, or Honeywell controls.
NIUPLE boiler operator or refrigeration operator certifications.
OSHA 10 or 30 Certifications.
Demonstrate a willingness to continuing education on HVAC, Boiler and Chiller equipment and technologies.
Experience
Expert (established subject matter expert, 7+ years experience).
At least 5-7 years of verifiable hands of hands-on repair and installation experience in a commercial HVAC service environment as a certified journeyman or mechanical contractor.
Hands on experience for installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC / Boiler / Chiller mechanical equipment, ductwork, and piping systems.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Using tools and techniques for HVAC technician:
- Considerable experience and use of safety tools, techniques, and PPE.
- Hands on repair and service experience on Boiler, Chiller, HVAC, and Air Handling equipment.
- Ability to read, interpret and understand system and equipment prints, layouts, ladder logic, picture diagrams and exploded parts views.
- Ability to understand the sequence of operations of associated equipment and systems.
- Techniques for troubleshooting electrical and pneumatic circuits, controls, valves, devices, and piping systems.
- Utilizing building automation systems, interface devices, computers, controls, DDC panels used for troubleshooting, operation, and management of associated equipment.
- Refrigerant system charging and evacuation, proper handling, transfer, and storage and / or disposal of refrigerants and chemicals used as an HVAC technician. This includes the regulated documentation requirements following EPA 608.
- Application and techniques of various piping materials, valves, fittings and joining techniques; like brazing, soldering, threading, etc.
- Experience with ducted air systems, vents, dampers, etc.
- Experience using advanced tools like laser alignment, vibration analysis or thermography tools used in predictive and preventive maintenance activities.
- Reading, writing and computer skills to enter information on work orders about the equipment, parts used, labor or other details about work schedules and jobs.
- Ability to interact and/or work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner.
