Position Overview
The Capital Projects Division within the City of Baltimore's Department of General Services is seeking a Mechanical Engineer - HVAC to develop mechanical engineering plans, specifications and estimates for in house engineering of small capital projects or maintenance projects (HVAC, plumbing, etc.).
Location
The Department of General Services’ main headquarters is located in the heart of downtown within close proximity of the Inner Harbor, the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, and the free Charm City Circulator bus service.
Responsibilities
- Develop mechanical engineering plans, specifications and estimates for in house engineering of small capital projects or maintenance projects (HVAC, plumbing, etc.).
- Conduct site visits to develop scope of work and to verify compliance with building codes and standards
- Prepare Expenditure Authorization Request (EAR) for professional services tasks
- Examine, review and evaluate design proposals, engineering plans, designs and specifications for compliance with mechanical engineering standards, policies, technical requirements, and City, State and Federal codes
- Manage design consultants and review payment applications
- Assists Contract Administration personnel in preparation of bid documents for project to be put out to bid
- Advise, review, and evaluate energy efficiency and sustainability projects
Attributes/Abilities
- Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
- Knowledge of the methods of engineering analysis.
- Knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems.
- Ability to develop engineering plans, designs, specifications and material and cost estimates.
- Ability to assign, review and approve the work of engineering personnel.
- Ability to write technical reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing.
Education and Experience Minimum Requirements
Requirements - A Bachelor's of Science degree in engineering from an accredited college or university and four years of experience in performing engineering work. Experience in HVAC and plumbing design required.
Equivalencies - A Master’s degree in engineering may be substituted for the Bachelors of Science degree in engineering OR for two years of the experience requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) from the State of Maryland.
