Purpose
Provide journey-level skills in plumbing, pipefitting, and steam fitting in support of campus facility renovation and repair projects. Also support campus special events.
Responsibilities
- Install, modify, and repair facility plumbing and mechanical systems, including potable water, steam, natural gas, chilled water, air and laboratory gases, wastewater, and all associated devices, fixtures, and equipment. Provide support to facility renovation, repair, and construction projects in compliance with project documents and schedules. Provide support to campus events.
- Provide timely and accurate processing of shop written and electronic documentation, including material requisitions, timesheets, and daily labor reports. Develop estimates and order materials. Assist team members in solving work-related problems at jobsites. Maintain high standards for employee conduct, productivity, and safety.
- Promote and maintain frequent communications and positive relations with all stakeholders. Promote a culture of teamwork within shop and with other shops. Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure timely completion of projects. Emphasize accountability for meeting schedule commitments. Practice and promote the values and goals of the university and the hiring department.
- Support zone maintenance shops and other campus departments in repair of existing plumbing systems, including after-hours response to project needs and campus facility emergencies. Support other trades with Mechanical Shop-related assignments, including but not limited to insulating and sheet metal fabrication. Support incidental project activities such as furniture relocation and appliance setup.
- Identify and order pipe, valves, fittings, and fixtures to meet project requirements. Cut, thread, and assemble pipe systems including iron, copper, stainless, glass, and various plastics. Maintain, troubleshoot, and test plumbing systems, including backflow prevention devices, if so licensed.
- Support and promote university safety procedures, in coordination with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), and PDC's Safety Coordinator. Follow safety protocols, including use of personal protective equipment, shop and jobsite cleanliness, and compliance with published policies and procedures for safe operation of shop equipment and vehicles. Ensure appropriate handling of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead, mold, and silica.
- Read, understand, and work from drawings, specifications, standards, and written or verbal instructions with or without direct supervision. Ensure projects are executed in accordance with project requirements, campus standards, and applicable codes.
- Support maintenance and operation of shop. Clean and adjust tools. Maintain and properly secure shop, tools, equipment, and vehicles. Assist with annual shop vehicle, equipment and warehouse inventory. Promote and maintain a clean and safe work environment in shop and at job sites.
- Drive UT vehicle to and from job sites to deliver personnel, equipment, and materials. Drive off-campus to purchase and pickup materials and equipment for projects.
- Attend management-directed meetings and training. Participate on hiring committees. Safely operate UT vehicles. Accomplish other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school graduation or GED. Three years journey-level experience in commercial or industrial plumbing, pipefitting, or steam fitting with emphasis on interior renovations. Currently licensed as journey-level plumber from Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. License must be maintained as a condition of continued employment. Demonstrated experience working with black iron, cast iron, copper, stainless, glass, and plastic pipe for laboratories and other specialized facility applications. Demonstrated ability to produce quality work from drawings, specifications, construction standards, and written or verbal instructions with or without direct supervision. Basic computer skills. Commitment to maintaining high standards for customer service, job performance, and jobsite safety. Proven ability to work as a team member in support of facility renovation and repair projects, including quality control and timely delivery of work performed. Professional demeanor, with excellent customer service and communication skills. Texas Class "C" driver's license or ability to obtain one 30 days after becoming a Texas resident.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Associates degree or graduation from vocational or technical training related to plumbing, pipefitting, or facility renovation or construction. More than three years journey-level experience in commercial or industrial plumbing. Experience working in a large university, commercial, or industrial physical plant environment. Experience working in research labs and healthcare environments. Licensed as a Master Plumber. Licensed by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as backflow prevention assembly tester or ability to obtain that license within one year of hire. Licensed as a Customer Service Inspector.
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Salary Range
$60,055 + depending on qualifications
