Job Summary
The Director of Building Operations manages and supports appropriate procedures, processes, and regulations related to the safety and security of student, faculty, and staff operations, school buildings and facilities, and school grounds. This role reports to the Head of School and Vice President, Operations for Herron Classical Schools.
Job Responsibilities
- Ensures the maintenance of facilities, including third-party vendor contracts for cleaning, lawn maintenance, security, maintenance, and before/after school care programs.
- Analyzes and documents facility wear and tear and makes recommendations as to facility improvement (i.e., carpet replacement, exterior and interior paint, turf, etc.).
- Plans for and inspects construction, repair work and related projects for the purpose of ensuring that contracted jobs are completed efficiently, as well as that specifications are within regulatory requirements.
- Responds to emergency calls for the purpose of notifying appropriate parties to address immediate safety issues during after-hours and weekends.
- Manages internal maintenance work order process to ensure faculty and staff requests and concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
- Manages the logistics for all special events hosted on school grounds, including the rental and use by external and network organizations.
- Manages vendor and contractor relationships for facility-related service, maintenance, and purchases. For contracts over $1000, the Director of Building Operations is required to request a minimum of two bids, 3 bids is preferable.
- Manages programs related to utilities.
- Coordinates AED monthly monitoring and AED supply orders.
- Supports New Employee onboarding and offboarding to operations procedures.
- Manages and issues employee keys/fobs, alarm codes, and radios.
- Coordination and management of school traffic patterns to ensure smooth and efficient student drop-off and pick-up.
- Coordination and management of faculty and staff safety/traffic duties.
- Support of classroom furniture setup and upkeep.
- Coordinates with the school Athletic Director on schedules, cleaning, and building access for all athletic events.
- Manages, maintains, and assigns student lockers.
- Coordinates with network staff to ensure State and Federal laws and regulations are adhered to in all areas, including but not limited to, asbestos mitigation, cafeteria and food safety, fire safety, elevator safety, and pest control.
- Coordinates and manages school PA systems and bell programming.
- Establishes and manages school security & safety programs, including:
- Oversees the operational readiness of all security monitoring and alert systems for assigned school.
- Coordinates and manages the Emergency Response Plan for assigned school.
- Ensures that all staff and faculty are adequately trained on their roles in the emergency preparedness plan.
- Plans and implements safety drills and debriefs with administration regarding areas of improvement.
- Attends Indiana Department of Education school safety training.
- Scheduling and management of security personnel.
- Ensures the facilities and grounds contain appropriate lighting and signage and are maintained.
- Identifies necessary safety and security coverage before and after school along with during passing periods to ensure students are safe at all times; monitors duties to ensure adequate coverage is maintained.
- Ensures that the buildings are secure each evening, weekend and school break.
- Coordinates services with local, state, and federal law enforcement and emergency agencies.
- Maintains a close liaison with county and state inspectors and representatives regarding safety and health to assure a safe condition in and around schools and buildings.
- An expectation of professional and ethical conduct and professional growth throughout the year.
- Collaboratively works with school faculty, staff, and leadership to support the policies, guidelines, and working procedures for Herron Classical Schools.
- Attendance at after-hour events that include, but may not be limited to, Parent Orientation, Meet the Teacher Night, Parent/Teacher Conferences and Open Houses. The dates of these events are listed on the Master Calendar or shared by school leadership.
- Performs other duties as determined necessary by school and Executive leadership.
- An assignment of 260 days with PTO as approved by Executive leadership.
Requirements:
Qualifications
- Bachelors’ degree from an accredited institution of higher education required.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience; school-based experience required.
- Operational experience in a school setting preferred.
- Proven ability to provide exceptional customer service to faculty and staff.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities.
- Ability to work in a team-based environment.
- Ability to work in an environment with children.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency and experience with Google and Microsoft Office products.
