Job Summary
The Director of Logan Center Facilities and Operations has overall responsibility for ensuring that the facility and operations advance the artistic practice and creative scholarship of the University’s students and faculty and supports a vibrant set of arts programs presented in partnership with colleagues and organizations at the University, in the community and beyond. Working closely with each of the arts curricular, and University and community partner programs that use the Logan Center, the Director oversees facility operations, schedule management, curricular space, and event support; supervises professional and student operations staff; develops and monitors budgets; formulates plans for building projects and ensures facility maintenance, custodial care, food service operations, and safety and security advance the priorities of the Logan Center and our many users. The Director reports directly to the Executive Director of the Logan Center and works closely with University Facilities Services to oversee all maintenance programs and repairs.
Responsibilities
- Develops and administers policies and procedures regarding the use of the Logan Center that support the users of the Center and the long-term condition of the Logan Center, its facilities, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
- Manages facility scheduling with direct responsibility for scheduling all shared and public spaces. Works closely with the University Registrar to schedule classroom spaces. Works closely with departments and programs in the Logan Center to coordinate scheduling across unit-controlled spaces.
- Manages and supports classrooms and curricular use of the Logan Center working closely with the academic programs that use the Logan Center, Registrar, and Logan Center Arts Technology team.
- Manages overall event and program operations and production support including working with University departments and external partners hosting events and programs at the Logan Center, as well as, the Logan Center Program and Engagement team.
- Directs the day-to-day operations, custodial, maintenance, repairs and receiving needs for the Logan Center.
- Works closely with University Facilities Services to provide senior leadership to custodial, event set up, on-going routine maintenance, and engineering.
- Supports internally generated facility requests from faculty and staff housed in the Center, including set-up, breakdown, repairs, and general assistance with individual space and scheduling needs and projects. Advises, coordinates and supervises events taking place in the Logan Center.
- Responsible for facility related regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness, and sustainability efforts.
- Works closely with the Department of Safety and Security to provide senior leadership to access control and surveillance camera systems and overall safety within the Center.
- Supervises the Associate Director of Logan Center Production, Assistant Director, and Evening & Weekend Manager. Supports managers who supervise the Scheduling & Events Coordinator, Production Manager, and other part-time and student staff
- Works closely with the Assistant Director and University sub-contractors to provide senior oversight of custodial and safety and security personnel.
- With Facilities Services, co-manages the Logan Center Building Engineer.
- Primary responsibility for marketing and generating facility-related revenue including Center use by non-arts related University departments and outside organizations – particularly during breaks and the summer.
- Develops and maintains a multi-year financial model and prepare quarterly and annual budget reports.
- Proposes, approves and coordinates facilities related purchases and services for the Logan Center.
- Serves as the primary liaison to UChicago Dining and the Logan Center food services vendor.
- Works with Center users and patrons to ensure that the food service provided meets the programmatic goals of the Logan Center including the first floor café, and catering that takes place within the Center.
- Works closely with University Legal Affairs Office and the Logan Center food service vendor to maintain necessary government licenses.
- Serves as a member of the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts staff and assist with various Logan Center programs and projects. This includes coordination with the broader UChicago Arts Initiative and the Humanities Division, representing the Logan Center on various arts-related committees both within the University and beyond.
- Develops facilities maintenance policies and procedures. Plans renovation and other facilities-related projects, including ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. Receives requests for facilities services and supervises delivery of appropriate services.
- Plans with staff from other units and reviews the work of contractors as well as facilities union and/or non-union staff.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

- 10 years of facilities management or operations experience.
- Background working with arts and/or University facilities.
- Supervising full- and part-time staff, union and non-union employees.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
- Demonstrated ability in financial/ budgetary processes (analysis and reporting).
- Competent computer skills, including knowledge of word-processing, spreadsheet programs and familiarity with facility management and systems software.

- Exceptional organizational skills. Oversee complex projects and schedules, maintain deadlines, work within budgets, set priorities and manage several projects simultaneously. Successfully manage a workload which balances long-range planning with the unanticipated daily demands of Center operations.

- Demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies. Work closely with faculty, students, staff, artists, and community members.
- Demonstrated history of creating and implementing systematic procedures that maintain high quality facilities.
- Knowledge of the University of Chicago or another large research institution.
- Familiarity with and experience working in a variety of civic arts organizations.
- Organizational and human relations skills; collaborate well and supportively and cultivate good relationships with various constituencies.
- The temperament to work with a diverse and demanding population.
- Self-directed and self-motivated, set goals and develop projects.
Working Conditions
- The successful management of a 180,000 Square ft. facility requires the ability to conduct regular building rounds.
- Evening and weekend work as needed. The position will be the primary contact for coordinating response to after-hours emergencies.
- Extended periods of movement and stationary work.

- Occasional setting up of chairs and tables for events. Movement of objects between 10 and 50 lbs.
