Your Opportunity as Ammonia Maintenance Technician
Responsible for all activities involving maintenance and operation of the plant utilities inclusive of the following: ammonia refrigeration system, freon packaged units and HVAC, high pressure steam boiler systems, thermal oil process boiler systems, hot water generator, compressed air systems, building sprinkler systems and all supporting equipment.
Location: Chicago, IL, Bakery
Work Arrangements:
- 100% on-site, 3rd Shift, 12-hour shifts, rotating days, must be willing to work a flexible schedule as needed, including weekends
Pay: $27.17 - $33.64 per hour
Reports to: Ammonia Manager
In this role you will:
- Maintains the following equipment: Ammonia refrigeration system, Freon packaged refrigeration units, heating and air conditioning equipment, high steam boiler systems, thermal oil process boiler systems, hot water generator, compressed air systems, building sprinkler systems, and any other supporting equipment as directed by management.
- Performs duties as assigned by the Ammonia Lead and Ammonia Manager.
- Ensures continuous operation of all the facility utility systems and peripheral equipment to support the requirements of the production schedule and facility conditions. This requires proper coordination of all operations and maintenance utilities equipment.
- Coordinates both internal and external resources for maintenance of the facility.
- Assists in the development of all environmental programs required from local, state, and federal agencies.
- Assists in the recordkeeping and training requirements for all components of the Process Safety Management/Risk (PSM/RMP) management plans to achieve compliance with state and federal guidelines.
- Provides technical analysis and services to provide real-time data on the status of refrigeration and operational equipment.
- Takes a leadership role on the emergency response team in the event of release of hazardous chemicals.
- Maintains boiler cooling tower chemistry to insure safe and proper boiler operation. Works with the water treatment supplier to assure the equipment is operating correctly.
- Assures the ammonia compressors are operating safely and efficiently to reduce energy consumption.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment to maintain in good working condition.
- Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics, and plumbing.
- Utilizes drawings, technical records, and vendor diagrams to complete Preventative Maintenance documents (PM’s) related to machine overhauls and repairs.
- Assists maintenance with mechanical emergencies as required.
- Completes duties in accordance with quality assurance, Good Manufacturing Practices, safety and other company programs and procedures, and in accordance with government codes and regulations.
- Maintains clean, organized, and safe work area, including wiping and washing equipment and tools; sweeping and mopping floors; trash removal.
- Works to maintain and improve on the quality, legality and safety of each product and the processes used in their manufacture. Responsible for keeping assigned work area clean and tidy at all times and reporting any
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- It is preferred but not necessarily needed. I would like them to have some knowledge of ammonia.
- Experience working with and knowledge of Ammonia refrigeration, certification plus.
- Knowledge of equipment set-up, functions, operating procedures, and preventative maintenance techniques.
- Experience working in a maintenance department.
- Proven track record of good attendance.
- Capability to work well in a team environment and be willing to help solve problems and implement solutions with diverse employees.
- Willingness to flow to the work to meet the needs of the business.
Additional skills and experience that we think would make someone successful in this role:
- Process Safety Management training.
- HVAC certification.
- Prior automated food manufacturing experience.
- Basic knowledge in programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
- Safely operate powered industrial equipment and follow all company Safety Rules & Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s).
- Familiarity with bakery equipment.
Tools and Equipment: All tools and equipment which are required to be used by the employees shall be supplied and kept in repair by the Employer at no cost to the employee. These items must be kept on the premises.

This job operates in a manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment and manufacturing sites can be high.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to talk and hear.
- Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- Able to lift objects up to 50 pounds frequently.
- May push and pull heavy trash carts, dough carts, portable equipment, and catch pans.
- Exposure and sugar dust, refrigerants, and chemicals daily. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
