DEPARTMENT: ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION
DUTIES: Under general directive supervision of the electrical substation manager, foreman, or
working foreman.
Directs and works with apprentices, skilled and semi-skilled workers in performing a variety of duties incident to the construction, maintenance, and installation of control equipment, testing, and repair of equipment, transformers, motors, etc.
Installs, maintains, and makes repairs to air break switches, oil switches, transformers, power circuit breakers, regulators, lightning arrestors, network protectors, circuit switchers, cables, switchboard wiring, and miscellaneous electrical equipment.
Maintains auto, power, and street lighting transformers including the setting of street lighting controls; assists in the installation of conduit, raceways, or capacitor banks; periodically cleans and maintains substation switchgear, breakers, and associated equipment; samples, tests, and filters oil from transformers, regulators, and breakers. Handles all gases used in substation equipment.
Performs in the inspection overhaul and testing of transformers, step or induction type voltage regulators, motors, power circuit breakers, reactors, capacitor banks, and network protectors.
Performs in the testing of oil from transformers, breakers, street lighting subs, and voltage regulators; filters new and used insulating oil. Also performs tests on insulating gases.
Takes preventative measures in maintaining and protecting substation steel from corrosion.
Performs periodical testing, recharging, and maintenance of substation service batteries.
Obtains proper clearance on equipment for maintenance or construction work and places tags on equipment accordingly after coordinating with the proper personnel.
Provides safety training and is responsible for the general safety of personnel and in administering first aid to injured persons when necessary; may work on energized lines or equipment involving hazard and requiring caution and the use of safety devices such as rubber protective equipment and hot line tools; conforms with all safety policies as established by the Company.
Instructs personnel in the proper and safe way to perform their duties and instructs and trains new personnel in the use of tools, equipment, and proper procedure.
Performs other related and assigned duties.
