BASIC FUNCTION: Install piping on new construction and existing facilities maintenance or modernization projects by performing journey-level steamfitting work.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. E = Essential Functions
- Install piping on new construction and existing facilities maintenance or modernization projects. E
- Install piping of all sizes and in a variety of materials including carbon steel, cast iron, copper, plastic, fiber glass, stainless steel, and other special alloys and types. E
- Work from plans and instructions, sketches and drawings. E
- Disassemble service, repair, troubleshoot, and maintain steam boilers, hot water boilers, and gas furnaces. E
- Maintain, repair and replace electronic and pneumatic thermostats, hot and cold water pumps, pressure gauges, gas valves, fans and air compressors. E
- Install new and repair existing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, boilers, steam lines, gas lines. E
- Cover pipes and boilers with insulation materials. E
- Drive a District service truck. E
- Take work assignments and perform complete job with minimum supervision. E
- Have regular and frequent contacts with all District employees, architecture and engineering employees, and with outside contractors. E
- May oversee laborers assigned to help with heavy lifting and rough unskilled work. E
- Work with all District employees, architecture and engineering employees, and with outside contractors. E
- Repair all district equipment and gates.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to: graduation from high school completion of a four to five-year apprenticeship and five years experience as a journeyman steamfitter.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification Type II or universal.
- Valid California Driver’s License suitable for driving District vehicles.
- Personality and character suitable to work in schools.
- Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, Tuberculosis and/or other employment clearance.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in system repairs, service and installation work.
- Safe working methods and procedures
- Technical aspects of field of specialty
ABILITY TO:
- Weld and pipe fitting required for high pressure steam, water and gas lines.
- Work independently with minimal supervision
- Meet schedules and time lines
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Observe all legal and District defensive driving practices
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor or outdoor environment; driving a District vehicle to conduct work; seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions; working around and with machinery having moving parts.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned tools and equipment; seeing to perform steam fitting work; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or moving moderately heavy objects; standing for extended periods of time; climbing ladders; heavy physical labor.
